rancho san carlos tree farmpot-in-pot tree farming system

The Pot-in-Pot (PNP) production system used at Rancho San Carlos Tree Farm has several advantages over the standard Ball & Burlap (B&B) system used by most growers.

With the PNP system, a “socket” pot is placed permanently in the ground, while a second “insert” pot, containing the tree and a rich soil, is placed in the socket pot. The plant roots are now insulated from the extreme summer and winter temperatures and each tree is individually watered and fertilized for 2-3 years, creating a strong, healthy tree.

At harvest time, the insert pot is removed and transported to your nursery or to the planting site. This type of “potted” tree will continue its healthy growth until sold and planted by you. This growing method allows for year round harvesting and since the root system has been undisturbed, the growth cycle continues uninterrupted and the survival rate increases.
